Ely Parker Signed Carte de Visite. 2.5" x 4", seated in civilian clothes and holding a book, with a C.D. Fredericks & Co., New York backstamp on verso. Signed on verso: "E.S. Parker Bt. Col. & Mil Secy." Ely Parker (1828-1898), a Seneca Indian, was an attorney, engineer, military man and tribal diplomat. During the Civil War he was present at many of the most important engagements including the Siege of Vicksburg, battle of Chattanooga, Overland Campaign, Siege of Petersburg and the Appomattox Campaign. He helped draft the surrender documents and was present when Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House. After the war he became the first Native American head of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Condition: Soiling and wear at the edges, with bumped corners. Pencil notation at the lower edge beneath the photograph. Adhesive & mounting residue on verso.
