White Supreme Court Photograph Signed by All Nine Justices. 15.75" x 12.25", Washington, D.C.; no date, circa 1911. Photograph produced by Harris & Ewing. Signed below the photograph by: Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., Willis Van Devanter, John Marshall Harlan, Horace H. Lurton, Edward D. White, Charles E. Hughes, Joseph McKenna, Joseph R. Lamar, and William R. Day. The White Court was responsible for overturning the grandfather clauses of the states of Oklahoma and Maryland that barred most African-Americans from voting because they were illiterate. The court found this went against the Fifteenth Amendment. It is also of interest to note that Edward White, who was appointed by President William Taft, is the only Chief Justice to be followed in that position by the president who had appointed him.
