Thomas Jefferson Document Signed as Governor of Virginia. One page, 8" x 11.75" (sight), Richmond, Virginia; June 14, 1780. A partially printed document that states in part that "in consideration of Military Service performed by George Moffett in the late War between Great Britain & France according to the terms of the King of Great Britain proclamation of 1763 there is granted by the said commonwealth unto the said George Moffett...one thousand Acres...in the County of Kentucky by the Waters of Elkhorn Creek..." Signed, "Th: Jefferson." Red wax seal at lower left. Matted and framed with an engraved print of Jefferson to the overall size of 22" x 15.25". Not examined outside of the frame. Following the English victory over France in the French and Indian War, King George III issued the Proclamation of 1763 in an attempt to organize the newly acquired territory, partly by granting some of those lands to British soldiers. George Moffett was granted some of this "in consideration" of service during the French and Indian War (1754-1763). When the Revolutionary War ended, three years after this document was signed, Great Britain's western lands, including the "County of Kentucky," were ceded to the United States. Condition: Dampstain to upper and lower right corners. Document has nearly separated at one fold. Some red wax residue is loose in the frame. Document, print and matting are toned. Frame scratched and chipped in a few places. HID03101062020 © 2020 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
