4th C. Japanese Kofun Pottery Jar

East Asia, Japan, Kofun period, ca. 4th to early 6th century CE. An elegant wheel-thrown pottery jar of a light taupe hue. Sitting upon an annular, flared foot decorated with three rectangular apertures, the ancient vessel displays a bulbous body, a sloped shoulder, and a thick neck that expands outwards to a gently flared, circular rim. The body, neck, and rim have been skillfully modeled from a single piece of clay, while the foot has been expertly applied. Light horizontal bands adorn the exterior of this gorgeous jar. Size: 4" in diameter x 6.25" H (10.2 cm x 15.9 cm)

Provenance: private California, USA collection, acquired prior to 2005

Condition Report: One chip to foot and another to rim with some light nicks in areas of both. Expected pitting and abrasions to surface commensurate with age. A few repairs to foot and shoulder. Otherwise, very nice with earthen deposits throughout.
