Cartier Extremely Rare 18k (E.W.C) Memovox Alarm Watch c.1954 with Hollywood Provenance Case: 35mm, 18k yellow gold, two piece snap case, #588208 Dial: two tone satin silver with applied gold numbers and markers, dauphine hands Movement: Base caliber P489x1 manual wind LeCoultre ebauche but signed and finished by European Watch & Clock (EWC) Band: new brown leather strap with crocodile imprint. Attached is a generic gold plated buckle. Signed: Dial signed Cartier. Case and movement signed by E.W.C. From the Estate of playwright, screenwriter, producer, songwriter and novelist Arnold Schulman. Oscar nominated for Best Original Screenplay for Love with the Proper Stranger (1963) and Best Adapted Screenplay for Goodbye, Columbus (1969) Mr. Schulman's remarkable career spanned four decades. His selected screenwriter credits include: Tucker: The Man and His Dream, A Chorus Line, Funny lady, Goodbye Columbus, Love with a Proper Stranger and A Hole in the Head. His collaborators included such Hollywood luminaries as: Frank Capra, Francis Ford Coppola, Richard Attenborough, Robert Evans, Frank Sinatra, William Friedkin, Alan Pakula, and George Cukor. The Cartier watch, presented here, was a gift from his fiancée, American actress Jean Alexander and was purchased from Cartier New York in 1954 as a wedding gift. The timepiece is accompanied by Mr. Schulman's personal copy of his book; A Hole in the Head (1959) which starred Frank Sinatra and Eleanor Parker. Attached is a generic gold plated buckle.Circa: 1954Condition: Case has not seen much polish as evidenced by the strong gold hallmarks on the lug and case side. Also inscription on the case back: "To Arnold with Much Love Jean June 1954" is still distinct. There is evidence of a repair to the upper right lug. The original dial is quite nice but does have just a bit of aging on the upper track between the "11" and the "2". The service history of the watch is unknown and is sold as described with no further warranty. As always, a fresh service is recommended for everyday use.
