5th C. Byzantine Glass Flask Dimpled Netting

[ translate ]

Ancient Near East, early Byzantine Empire, ca. 5th to 7th century CE. A lovely mold-formed glass flask, of a petite form shaped from gorgeous aubergine-hued glass, with a lightly-concave base, a spherical body with a slightly-indented shoulder, a funnel mouth, and an in-folded rim. The body is pattern-molded with dozens of raised squares in a netting-style presentation which imbues the vessel with a delicate, elegant presentation, and thick areas of silvery and rainbow-hued iridescence nicely complement the flask's eggplant color. Size: 2.2" W x 3" H (5.6 cm x 7.6 cm).

For a stylistically-similar example of a blue hue, please see "Shining Vessels: Ancient Glass from Greek, Roman and Islamic Times." Fortuna Fine Arts, Ltd., New York, 1991, p. 56, fig. 91.

Provenance: ex-Stephen Shalom, collection, New York City, New York, USA, 1970s, purchased in Israel

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
