5th C. Byzantine Steatite Pendant w/ Silver Frame

Near East / Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, ca. 5th to 6th century CE. A fascinating and rare steatite relief pendant set into a 95% silver frame. The pendant depicts busts of the Virgin and St. John with hands raised in blessing. The silver frame has on the back the bust of St. George shown holding a spear and shield executed in repousse. The pale grey steatite was likely once painted bright colors. Eight loops once studded the sides, with five remaining, allowing this pendant to be sewn onto a special garment or ornament. Size: 1.7" W x 1.45" H (4.3 cm x 3.7 cm); silver is 95% pure; total weight: 13.6 g

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-George & Janet Zakos collection, Switzerland, acquired in the 1970s

Condition Report: Small losses from steatite face to edges. Silver is also partially lost on its upper edge, exposing the back of the steatite. Five of the eight original loops on the sides of the silver remain, with a sixth repaired. Light deposits on surface.
