6 Medieval English Pewter Livery & Pilgrim Badges

Northwestern Europe, England, Medieval to late Medieval period, ca. 12th to 16th century CE. A collection of 6 pewter badges to display guild and political affiliations and for pilgrimages. Included is a passant lion for the English monarchy, a crown possibly for the shrine of Edward the Confessor, a crossbow for a bowyer's guild, and a ragged staff, representing a knobbed ash tree - the livery badge for the Earl of Warwick. The winged phallus is an interesting and humorous pin - erotic badges of both male and female genitalia with were popular in the late Medieval period. The last is a circular Thomas Becket badge for his shrine in Canterbury, one of the most famous pilgrimage sites in England. Size (ragged staff): 1.25" L x 0.25" W (3.2 cm x 0.6 cm)

Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA acquired before 2000
