Inscribed with foundry mark on base: Priessmann, Bauer & Co., Munich, Bavaria 4. PROVENANCE: The artist; Estate of the above; Peter D. Shoebill Stork and Goliath Heron (lot 67136 and 67137) are two of ten models of birds used in the final design for the Paul J. Rainey Memorial Gateway to the New York Zoological Gardens, Bronx, New York. Commissioned in 1923 by Grace Rainey Rogers, the gateway was dedicated on June 14, 1934. Examples of the working models for these birds were cast by Pressman-Bauer in a variety of finishes and mounted on elegant bases, often of semi-precious stones such as lapis lazuli. Condition Report: Overall very good condition. Slight rubbing and patina wear to areas of high relief. Some dust and accretion accumulation in the recesses. Small spot of loss on the bird's tail feathers. Some scattered faint scratches and scuffs. French customs stamp on underside of pedestal.
