Albert Bierstadt (American, 1830-1902) Salmon Fishery Village Oil on paper 12-1/2 x 17-3/4 inches (31.8 x 45.1 cm) PROVENANCE: Lockwood de Forest, New York; Private collection, New York, by descent; Private collection, New York. Salmon Fishery Village may have been executed circa 1889 while Bierstadt traveled across the country and headed into the Northwest. The Chippewa Indians, located in upper Michigan and Wisconsin, were known for making Birch Bark canoes similar to the canoe depicted in the present work. This work will be included in the Albert Bierstadt catalogue raisonné project by Melissa Webster Speidel. A letter from Melissa Webster Speidel accompanies this lot. Condition Report: Framed under glass. Hinged in five places, two at the top, two at lower sides, one in center; Under UV light, 1/2 inch area of inpaint in each of the 4 corners; Scattered pinpoint size dots of inpaint in the upper left quadrant.
