6th C. Indian Gupta Sandstone Head of Woman
Central Asia, India, Uttar Pradesh, later Gupta Period, ca. 6th to 7th century CE. A hand-carved piece of earthy red sandstone depicting the face of a woman with a large headdress. Bands of pale beige stone flow through the face, which has fine, naturalistic features, with large eyes underneath arched brows, a wide nose, and a small, full-lipped mouth. This was probably once a part of a temple or palace decoration. Size: 3.5" W x 5.1" H (8.9 cm x 13 cm)
Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; purchased in Mathura, India, in 1958
