6th C. Pre-Viking Silver Bracteate Pendant w/ Filigree

Northern Europe, Scandinavia, pre-Viking period (often called Migration period or Germanic Iron Age), ca. 6th to 7th century CE. A gorgeous 96% silver bracteate pendent decorated with a rope filigree pattern. The pendant is a hammered circular panel, like a shield, with a central convex boss that is studded with a central granulated sphere surrounded by filigree loops. Double spirals formed by filigree and spherical granulated balls adorn the periphery of the pendant, inside an applied wire rim. At the top is an integral suspension loop with four more filigree rings. The loop is folded to the back of the pendant with is unadorned. This piece is stunning and could be made wearable with a cord or chain. Pendants like this one were made to be worn around the neck as a type of amulet or sewn onto clothing and were frequently made of melted down coinage traded north from the Mediterranean. Size: 1.5" L x 1.25" Diameter (3.8 cm x 3.2 cm); silver quality: 96%; weight: 4.5 grams

Condition Report: Slight bending to form. Minor surface wear as expected with age, minor nicks and chips, and indentations to granulated balls. A stable hairline surface fissure on the verso does not affect pendant's structure and is not visible from frontside. Light mineral deposits in recessed areas. Wearable and could be easily strung on a cord or chain.
