Central Europe, southwestern France to the Iberian Peninsula, Visigoth, Migration Period, ca. 6th to 7th century CE. A leaf-shaped two-part 90% gold (equivalent to 21K+) belt buckle with a moveable prong and attachment holes as well as a strap plate section. Both segments are engraved with curvilinear motifs and adorned with red pigment. An extraordinary luxury item created during a period of immense social unrest when it was wise to wear your treasures on your person. This piece may have been used for a baldric or as a helmet fastener. Regardless, a buckle like this was most certainly intended to be a visual sign of wealth, status, and rank.
