Wang Guangyi (b. 1957) No Pepsi, 2005 Acrylic on canvas 59 x 47 inches (149.9 x 119.4 cm) Signed and dated on the reverse: 2005 Wang Guangyi PROVENANCE: The artist; Private collection, New York, acquired from the above. NOTE: Wang Guangyi (b. 1957, Harbin, China) studied painting at the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts and was a founding member of the Northern Art Group, one of the first avant-garde groups to emerge in the 1980s in China. He is best known for his bright, bold Great Criticism series of paintings and prints that have become iconic visions of the Political Pop aspect of contemporary Chinese art. An amusing blend of Communist era propaganda and imagery from Western advertising and contemporary brands, Wang's pieces are graphically striking critiques of both modern Chinese and Western consumer cultures.
