7th C. Anglo-Saxon Iron Andirons w/ Ram Heads (pr)
Northern Europe, Anglo-Saxon or possibly other Germanic culture, ca. 7th to 9th century CE. A fine pair of cast-iron andirons used to support large logs within a grand hearth. Each andiron boasts a stocky, tapering body with a curved upper neck leading to a stylized ram head finial with a conical snout and a pair of curling horns. One andiron stands atop a pair of bent legs, and the other only has a single remaining leg. Irons items with such intricate detailing are quite scarce, making this matching pair an exceedingly rare find indeed! Size of largest (two legs): 11.4" W x 14.5" H (29 cm x 36.8 cm); 15.1" H (38.4 cm) on included custom stand.
