LOT 0041

7th C. Viking / Anglo-Saxon Iron Axe Head

[ translate ]

Northern Europe, Viking or Anglo-Saxon culture, ca. 7th to 9th century CE. A forged-iron axe head with a tall, crescent-shaped blade and a slender yet dense neck bearing a circular hafting socket. Protruding points flank the sides of both the upper and lower shaft rims and a vertical flange on the butt end lends additional support when hafting the head onto a handle. Although impressive, the form may have served a ceremonial purpose rather than as a weapon or utilitarian tool- perhaps as a burial offering meant to accompany a great warrior into the afterlife. Size: 5" L x 6.75" H (12.7 cm x 17.1 cm)

Provenance: private Pembroke Pines, Florida, USA collection, acquired in 1996 via inheritance in Hollywood, Florida, USA

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to recent increases of shipments being seized by Australian & German customs (even for items with pre-UNESCO provenance), we will no longer ship most antiquities and ancient Chinese art to Australia & Germany. For categories of items that are acceptable to ship to Australia or Germany, please contact us directly or work with your local customs brokerage firm.
