8th C. Viking Iron Tool & Utensil Assortment (10)

Northern Europe, Scandinavia, Viking or Norse Culture, ca. 8th to 11th century CE. A fine collection of 10 forged iron utilitarian tools of various functions. First are 6 spoons or ladles with circular bowls and thick handles. Four have suspension holes and loops. The center of one is perforated with a rectangular hole, perhaps to use as a strainer. The next is a spatula shaped utensil with a twisted wrought handle and loop tip. Next is a scythe head with a curved blade and flat blade protrusion, and a narrow tang for hafting to a handle. The next item is a pointed pick with a suspension hole through the square head. Perhaps a single pronged eating pick or some type of blacksmithing tool. Last is a spear head or blade with a thick, triangular form. All have thick russet patinas as well as great signs of age and are displayed in a modern Riker case. Size of largest axe head: 13" L x 3" W (33 cm x 7.6 cm); spear head: 3.5" L x 1.25" W (8.9 cm x 3.2 cm); case: 16.25" L x 12.25" W (41.3 cm x 31.1 cm)

Provenance: private Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA collection; ex-Dr. David Harner collection, Springdale, Arkansas, USA, acquired between the 1950s and 1960s
