8th C. Viking / Norse Iron Adze Blade

Northern Europe, Scandinavia, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 8th to 11th century CE. A forged-iron adze or hoe blade with a circular socketing hole and a horizontal blade. The butt end is thick and blunt, and this tool could perhaps be used as a hammer as well as an adze. The wide blade edge would be useful for a number of agricultural purposes, such as digging or chopping. The socketing hole enabled this head to be mounted on a pole or handle. While, utilitarian, a iron adze could also serve as a weapon if the need arose. A rich patina coats this multifunctional tool! Size: 4.5" L x 1.75" W (11.4 cm x 4.4 cm)
