8th C. Viking Rus Silver Lunate Pendant

[ translate ]

Northern / Eastern Europe, Baltic Vikings / Viking Rus, ca. 8th to 12th century CE. This is a stunning high quality silver pendant hammered into a crescent shape with a stamped floral motif, all suspended on a silver ring. The ring is a slender wire, the terminal tips interlock and wrap around themselves and the pendant is cut from a hammered and flat sheet of 92% silver, and 5 four petaled cross of flower shapes are stamped into the frontside. An integral loop at the top secures the crescent to the wire ring, and they are wearable and strung on a modern cord with a silver-plated lobster clasp. This lunar symbol was popular in the post-Roman and Migration era world. Though its true meaning to later cultures is unknown, it perhaps draws inspiration from ancient deities such as Diana and Selene. Size of pendant with ring: 1.5" L x 1" W (3.8 cm x 2.5 cm); cord: 21" L (53.3 cm); silver quality: 92%; weight: 1.4 grams

Provenance: private Carmichael, California, USA collection, acquired in the 1990s

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
