English Description

A 12-piece set of fish knives and forks - Probably Russia, late 19th century

Silver. Handle with floral relief decoration and monogram. Hallmarks. Ca. 587 g.

The artist was born in Biere near Magdeburg and first trained as an art teacher in Kassel, followed by her art studies at the Kunstgewerbeschule Magdeburg and the Academy in Munich 1906-1909. After her time in Munich, Marquardt lived in Berlin until 1912, where she became acquainted with the works of the German and international avant-garde. She may also have attended the \"First German Autumn Salon\"" in 1913, founded by Herwarth Walden, founder of the gallery \""Der Sturm\"", where the Orphists and Cubists, including Robert Delaunay, exhibited alongside the artists of the Blaue Reiter. After the First World War, Marquardt also turned to the field of ceramics. From 1922 she lived with the ceramist Augusta Kaiser (1895-1932) and moved to Hanover in 1927, where she taught until 1949. It is only in recent times that the work of both artists has been adequately appreciated; in 2013, the Frauenmuseum Wiesbaden dedicated the exhibition \""Auguste Kaiser - Hedwig Marquardt - Ein Künstlerinnenpaar\"" to them. Literature: Cat. Ausst. Kieler Kunst-Keramik 1924-1930. Augusta Kaiser, Hedwig Marquardt und weitere Künstler, Ostholstein-Museum Eutin 2015, ed. by Joachim Konietzy/u.a., Eutin 2015. Konietzny, Joachim: Augu.
