The graphite drawing with red gouache highlights is one of four in this auction that originated in the sketch book of a tattoo artist identified as I. Reiquier. The group was purportedly purchased from Balish Antiques at the Madison Square Gardens Antique Show in 1956 and later, purportedly exhibited at a tattoo history exhibition at the American Folk Art Museum as entry number 61, Three Tattoo Sketches from the sketchbook of I. E. Reiquer C. 1870.

This sheet depicts Columbia standing with a federal shield and Phrygian 'liberty' cap on staff (symbol of freedom and the pursuit of liberty in the American Revolution). Price is noted as $1.75. The name I. E. Reiquer is lower right on one of the sketches from this group.

Sight size measures 8.25 x 5.25 with a framed size of 11.2 x 9.25 inches.
