A 19TH CENTURY ANGLO INDIAN VIZAGAPATAM CARVED SANDALWOOD BOX

[ translate ]

Antique 19th century Anglo-Indian jewelry, trinket footed box, inlay with ebony, mosaic marquetry Sadeli work, and carved Hindu scenes in three medallions on top. The box case is made from sandalwood with intricately hand-carved padouk wood reliefs on all sides and banded and edged in damascene micro mosaic made from bone and ebony, in various geometric patterns. Cast brass lion feet on each corner. A pair of hinged handles on the opposite short sides. The sides and rear have intricately carved foliage and exotic animals on relief panels. The lid opens to reveal the original containers and ink-holding accessories. Small marquetry works ornament the lids. The ancient art of Sadeli Mosaic is said to have been introduced from Shiraz in Persia via Sind to Bombay, a long time before the Anglo Indian boxes were made. The workmanship was, however, more than commensurate with the value of the materials. Manufactured circa 1880s, British Colonial Empire, Victorian Era.

Dimensions: 6 x 14 x 10 in., (15 x 36 x 25 cm.)

Condition: Good. Some Damages on edges and corners. General wear on carvings. Tesseras missing.
