A 19th Century Mahogany and Brass Bound Campaign Style Writing Slope.

A 19th-century mahogany campaign-style writing slope featuring brass-bound corners, strappings, and inset side carry handles. The rectangular box is constructed with an inlaid brass escutcheon and a matching shaped brass plate to the lid. The interior, accessed via a silver-toned metal key, opens to a green felt-lined sloped writing surface with two hinged compartments underneath, revealing a secondary wood interior. The upper section contains a central recessed pen tray and three small compartments designed for inkwells and desk accessories. Accompanying the slope is a Victorian carte-de-visite (CDV) photograph of a bearded gentleman, set within a pink floral lithographed border. No maker marks or labels are visible on the exterior or interior of the box.

Length: 47.5 cm.
Width: 25.5 cm.
Height: 17 cm.

More Information

The mahogany veneer shows significant age-related wear, including several surface scratches and cracks to the lid and sides (photos 1, 4, and 5). The brass components exhibit widespread tarnishing and oxidation (photos 3 and 6). The interior green felt is heavily stained, faded, and shows fraying along the central fold (photo 7). The secondary wood interior shows ink staining and general wear consistent with use (photos 8 and 9). The CDV photograph shows light foxing and toning to the card mount (photo 2).
