A BAKSHIASH CARPET, NORTHWEST PERSIA

circa 1880

approximately 547 by 365cm; 17ft. 11in., 11ft. 11in.

Condition Report:
There is a slight bow in the centre of the lower end, as visible in the illustration, so the carpet varies from 547 to 557cm approximately. There is about 4 inches play in the length. Condition generally sound overall, with good evenly sheared pile of about 1.5mm in depth. Slightly lower in localized area of the field, most particularly centre top point of red ground. Right-hand spot foundation visible on red ground on the right hand side of the main medallion, and again on right hand side of lower edge of main medallion in lower part of field. Minor amounts of spot foundation visible scattered elsewhere. Outermost striped guard bands removed at each end and with slight losses to white guard stripe. Sides and ends all reinforced with stitched cotton tape. There is a small area of repiling half way down on right hand side, extremely well executed. Restoration to side cords. Very pretty watery blue colours in the main medallion and the spandrels. Overall a very pretty decorative carpet.
