A BAMBOO VENEER 'ABSTINENCE' PLAQUE

Decorated on each side four pairs of chi dragons and archaic scrolls, the center with a rectangular cartouche enclosing two raised characters zhai jie on one side, which may be translated as 'abstinence', and the other side similarly inscribed in Manchu script, the rectangular plaque drilled vertically for stringing.

'Abstinence' (齋戒) plaques were worn at the chest by Qing dynasty officials during the period leading up to imperial rituals and ceremonies at the Palace. Participants were required to follow restrictions such as daily cleansing and vegetarian diet, and they were forbidden to drink wine. The plaque also serves as a reminder that the wearer and people around them shall stay solemn and respectful.
