A BLACK-GLAZED PIERCED POTTERY EWER
Iran, 12th century
Of globular shape, resting on a circular slightly splayed foot, rising to a conical neck with a wide circular mouth, a curved handle and a tapering spout on the sides, the earthenware body glazed in translucent black and pierced in a lattice of uneven polygonal holes maximising the airflow and maintaining the coolness of the liquid stored inside the ewer, 21.5cm high.
Provenance: Acquired in 1960’s – 1970’s in Iran and in the UK since 1981.
