A BLACK STONE RELIEF FRAGMENT OF ACALA, PALA PERIOD, CIRCA 11TH-12TH CENTURY

Northeastern India. Boldly carved, the powerful deity shown in a dynamic seated posture atop an integral base with his left knee raised and the right leg folded beneath him, his full, muscular body dramatically inclined to one side. The right arm is raised beside the head grasping a sword, while the left is held before the chest in karana mudra.

The animated face is finely modeled with large eyes, a broad nose, pursed lips framed by a neatly curled moustache, and plump rounded cheeks. His hair rises into an elaborate tiered chignon secured by a jeweled diadem and centered by a prominent crest, with long locks falling onto the shoulders. He is richly adorned with large circular earrings, multiple necklaces, bracelets and armlets, while a diaphanous sash is visible around his waist.

Provenance: From a private collection in Germany.

Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Expected wear, obvious losses, rubbing, signs of weathering and erosion, and encrustations.

Weight: 715 g
Dimensions: Height 16.8 cm

Expert's note: The present figure was probably conceived as a subsidiary deity within a larger Pala-period black-stone stele rather than as an independent image. Its roughly worked reverse, compact scale, and strongly lateral, animated pose suggest that it originally occupied the side or lower register of a larger composition. Pala steles typically center on a principal deity surrounded by smaller bodhisattvas, protectors, attendants, Buddhas, and worshippers. See a black-stone stele of Padmapani at Christie's New York, 21 March 2012, lot 739, with a similarly carved diminutive wrathful figure seated to the left of the deity, with one hand raised and the other balanced atop a sword. Such subsidiary figures were an essential part of the divine retinue and enlivened the otherwise strongly frontal composition. The pronounced inclination and energetic posture of the present figure are especially well suited to such a supporting position.

Achala, the Immovable One, provides the closest iconographic identification for the present figure. His characteristic form shows the right arm raised to brandish a sword, while the left hand is held before the chest in a threatening gesture and grasps a lasso. He may assume a dynamic half-kneeling posture as though rising and is richly adorned with jewelry and an elaborate coiffure. These features correspond closely to the present figure: the vigorously raised right arm, the fragmentary weapon, the threatening gesture of the left hand, and the compact asymmetrical posture.

Literature comparison:
Compare a closely related stone figure of Mahakala, Tibet, dated to the 12th century, 11.1 cm high, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, object number 2015.500.4.17.
