A BORDJALOU KAZAK RUG, SOUTHWEST CAUCASUS

late 19th century

approximately 200 by 145 cm.

Condition Report:
Pile varies from approx 4mm in areas of the border particularly the top right hand corner and blues, to more like 2-3mm generally in the whites with some areas where low to knotheads, eg in central left hand border and lower part of upper medallion. Reds generally vary in depth from 1-2mm on the left hand side of the field to knotheads just appearing in the lower half of the field and borders (corrosion). Dark browns oxidised to knot heads. Dark browns appear to be predominantly original from the back of rug, with just a few knots replaced. Upper end with teased warp fringing, ends back stitched, extreme tip of top right hand corner and top left hand corner restored. Lower end with very outermost dark brown band removed, teased trimmed warp fridges overlocked in dark brown wool to stabilise. Some minor restorations to side cords. Strong, clear colours and bold graphics. Additional images available on request from the department.
