Technique: Etching on Paper, mounted on Paper

Inscription: Lower right signed in the printing plate: "ABosse in et Federzeichnung / le Blond excud avec Privilege du Roy". At the lower part inscribed in the printing plate: "Que le graveur ingénieux Fasse briller icy vos nouv á - yeaux. Par des traits dela main subtile L’ouvrage s’acheve prompte & viste, Et quand il sert la Nature, Elle luymeslasousmet ses loix. Celuy dont la noble mainiere Contre l’accablante lumiere Sait repousser par son crayon Dans leurs Ouvrages ordinaires Maxine, ce n’est pas aujour - Hui que je veux laisser ignorer, Combien tu m’es cher en ce jour, Et combien qui te voit, te doit aimer, Que c’est pourquoy chascun te peint Rigaud, le Brun, et que tes mains. Il fust d’un graveur Flamand, Ou d’un maistre Italien, (Ou tous les deux d’un seul coup Eblallyssent tout le Parnasse.) Soit qu’en un riche Jaspe, ou Colle Aux Murs de l’Antique Rome Ou que chascun admiroit tes traits En des tableuax plus que parfaits Qu’au Ciseau d’un Grece Sculpeur Qui de son art faicte la gloire Se veu en leur grandeur entrainée Chascun admirant la main qui l’a formée Mele quand je veux peindre ta louange, D’ouyr tes louanges ravi Je trouve que devant de lauaige Il fait un chef-d’auvre sans prix Et que chascun admirant la main Est l’object des Muses & Amour".

Description: The finely engraved depiction shows four people in an interior scene with artistic décor. In the centre is a painter creating a portrait on an easel. Objects of art and paintings refer to a studio. The classical style, the precise lines and the rich iconography emphasise the importance of artistic creation. The painter is met by a boy with a pile of prints, presumably copperplate engravings or etchings of the master's works.

Condition: Challenging condition. The sheet edges are narrowly trimmed. Like all with vertical fold in the centre. This is torn on the whole side and has been restored. Crease at top centre due to printing. The sheet corners minimally bumped. Damaged at the top right and along the right edge of the sheet due to marginal tears and traces of feeding. Coarse loss of the paper surface due to rubbing in the centre right. Several bumps to the lower left edge.
