A BRONZE FIGURE OF BUDDHA SHAKYAMUNI, MING DYNASTY

China, 1368-1644. Seated in dhyanasana on a separate elaborate lotus blossom platform atop a single stem encircled by a wave-form balustraded dais supported by aproned feet, the right hand lowered in bhumisparsha mudra and the left held above the lap, dressed in loosely draped robes with bow-tied undergarment, decorated with neatly incised foliate hems, the bared chest with a wan emblem incised to center. The serene face with heavy-lidded eyes below arched brows, his full lips forming a calm smile, flanked by elongated earlobes. The hair arranged in tight snail-shell curls surrounding the ushnisha and topped by a jewel.

Provenance: Swedish trade. A private collector in Sweden, acquired from the above.
Condition: Good condition with wear and casting irregularities. Few losses, small cracks, light nicks, scratches, slight warping to base, signs of weathering and erosion, small areas of corrosion, encrustations, remnants of lacquer. Restoration to the stem and lotus base. The bronze with a rich, naturally grown, dark patina.
