A BRONZE GRAIN SERVING VESSEL AND COVER, LIAN
China, Han dynasty

The body with a circular section, laying on three feet in the shape of a stylized human figure, in the upper part of the wall two ring handles with a mobile ring, the domed lid has on the upper side three figures of animals in the round and a relief stylized four petals flower with a small ring in the center.

24 cm high

Provenance : Fabrizio Savi collection, acquired from Anthony J. Allen, Auckland, New Zealand, between 1995 and 2000.
This kind of container - whose shape evidently resembles the coeval Roman cistas - could be used to heat wine in a bain-marie or to contain food. However, it is unlikely that it was used to heat drinks or cook food because the legs are obviously too short. Its shape also recalls more ancient lacquered wood containers that were used to store cosmetics.
