A BRONZE 'IMMORTALS ISLAND' INCENSE BURNER, BOSHAN XIANGLU
China, Han dynasty

The incense burner has a stem cup with acircular base finely decorated with sinuous stylized dragons, surmounted by a conical cover naturalistically moulded as a group of mountains, the holes resemblling lakes.

12,5 cm high

Provenance : Fabrizio Savi collection, acquired from Anthony J. Allen, Auckland, New Zealand, between 1995 and 2000.
Published in A.J. Allen, Allen's Authentication of Ancient Chinese Bronzes, Auckland 2001, p. 117.

The shape of the upper part of this censer, with its three-dimensional landscape, is a reference to the Island of the Immortals, that fantastic place where, according to Daoist doctrine, immortal being (xian) gathered. A censer similar to this is in the Museum of East Asian Art in Bath (B.S. McElney, The Museum of East Asian Art. Inaugural Exhibition. Volume 2. Chinese Metalwares and Decorative Arts, Bath 1993, p. 54, n. 252).
