A BRONZE OIL LAMP WITH A FIGURE OF NANDI, SOUTH INDIA, 17TH-18TH CENTURY

Well modeled as Shiva's bull standing foursquare on a stepped rectangular plinth, finely engraved with geometric and floral motifs, the bridled animal wearing a foliate collar and draped with a blanket which is surmounted by a lotus form cup, serving as the oil receptacle.

Provenance: French trade. Acquired from an old estate in the department of Eure-et-Loir.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and casting irregularities. Scattered encrustations, rubbing, tiny nicks, and small pits. The base slightly warped around the edges. The bronze with a fine, naturally grown, dark patina.
