A BROWN SILK DAMASK AND EMBROIDERED INFORMAL LADY'S ROBE, QING DYNASTY

China, 19th century. The brown silk ground finely woven with swirling clouds and the Eight Buddhist emblems (bajixiang), embroidered in satin and forbidden stitch with gold-thread highlights with eight roundels depicting young noble couples in a fenced garden enclosed by rockwork, prunus, peony, and chrysanthemum, surrounded by butterflies and further flowers including aster, narcissus, and orchid. The sleeves and collar with a beige ground similarly decorated with butterflies and flowers.

Provenance: From a private collection in Texas, USA.
Condition: Very good condition with little soiling, minor scattered pulls to embroidery, and few loose threads.
