A Bayreuth red earthenware teabowl and saucer with a “Kalebstraube“

With original saucer. Both items painted with gentlemen in Oriental attire carrying bundles of grapes. Unmarked. Small retouch to the ground of the saucer, some wear. D saucer 11.9, H tea bowl 4 cm.
Knöller period, circa 1728 – 1744.

The term “Kalebstraube” (Caleb's grapes, or, the grapes of Canaan) originates from the Bible (Num. 13:1-33) and refers to an event during the Israelites' wanderings through the desert in which Moses sent spies, including Joshua and Caleb, to explore the territory of Canaan. They returned after 40 days with a bunch of grapes so large that they needed two men to carry it and reports of a land where milk and honey flowed. This led to the historic use of this motif as a symbol for wealth and abundance.

Literature

Cf. similar decor in cat. Bayreuther Fayencen, Landshut 1994, no. 94 ff.
