A Berlin KPM porcelain plate with the "Porta Nigra."

Model no. 1084. The well painted with a view of the overgrown city gate of Trier. The border and cavetto with bands of foliate ornament. Blue sceptre mark, black rhombus, impressed LI, incised II. D 24.5 cm.

This view of the Roman northern city gate of Trier, which was constructed in the 2nd century A.D., shows its condition after Napoleon ordered the demolishion of the churches built next to it. The medieval apsis on the right was gutted from 1804 to 1809. The building was reconstructed by the Prussians in 1815 on the Roman ground plan without the Gothic apsis and used as a museum of antiquities.
