A CALLIGRAPHIC COMPOSITION IN THE SHAPE OF AN EAGLE
Possibly Turkey or India, 20th century
Of rectangular form, the calligraphic composition carved out from a single piece of wood and shaped as an eagle on a perch, quoting the Naad-e 'Ali quatrain, 48cm the eagle and 78cm with the frame.
This composition presents a skilful example of zoomorphic Islamic calligraphic art, which developed in Ottoman Turkey and India as early as the mid 15th century. To produce this art, one requires a strong understanding of calligraphy as the script not only has to metamorphose into living forms but needs to be readable as well. This example in wood represents the ongoing legacy of calligraphic compositions even as late as the 20th century. For a similar example, please see Sotheby's London, 9 October 2013, lot 208.
