A CARVED WOOD CHAMBA MASK WITH PIGMENT, NIGERIA

The Chamba carved wood mask or headdress in the form of an abstracted bird-like figure is painted with red and other earth pigments, north eastern Nigeria.

Provenance: Morton and Estelle Sosland. The Soslands began acquiring examples of African and other tribal art in the 1960s, possibly earlier. Over the last two decades, objects of African Art with provenance to Morton and Estelle Sosland have been sold for up to six figures at major auctions in New York and California.
Measures 17 x 10.5 inches.
Very good condition, noting some insect damage and small breaks to the tips of the design. There are no other issues of damage or repair beyond normal native use.
Provenance: The estate of Morton and Estelle Sosland.In Kansas City, the Sosland family name is synonymous with both giving, and the arts. Of their many contributions to the community, 'The Soslands gave one of the nation's finest private collections of American Indian art to the Nelson-Atkins' museum (nelson-atkins.org). The content of this auction bears testament to their keen eye and varied interests. No property has been added; each lot here originates with the Sosland family and sells without reserve.
