A CHINESE BLUE AND WHITE FIGURATIVE VASE Transitional period, circa 1628 過渡期 約1628年 青花人物故事賦圖詩文瓶 《成化年製》款 Of slender baluster form, painted to the exterior with a panel enclosing a figural scene depicting a lady sailing in a boat along a river, gazing towards the banks at a scholar riding on a donkey as an attendant follows, the landscape dotted with pine trees and jagged rocky outcrops, the reverse with a panel enclosing a signed poem, four-character Chenghua mark to base, 22.7cm high - PROVENANCE: Private collection, UK. 來源： 英國私人收藏。 - NOTE: The Transitional Period (1620-1683) was a turbulent time in Chinese history, covering the time between the Ming dynasty losing control of the imperial kilns at Jingdezhen, and the Qing dynasty gaining it. While this period specifically refers to a lack of imperial control of porcelain production, it is set against a backdrop of protracted and bloody civil war. During this time the system of imperial orders collapsed, and the once-obedient civil servants had to become go-getting businessmen, seeking new clients both domestic and overseas. The new customer base led to stylistic changes on the porcelain, with many new products decorated with literary scenes copied taken woodblock prints.
