A CHINESE DOUCAI GANLI VASE
Dimensions: Height 22,5 cm Wide 12 cm Depth 12 cm
Weight: 592 grams
A slender porcelain vase rising from a broad, domed foot through a rounded lower body and a smaller swelling section to a tall flaring mouth. The white ground is covered with finely organised floral scrolls in turquoise, blue, green and warm orange tones. Bands of stylised petals, geometric borders and scrolling foliage articulate each change in the vessel's profile, while larger blossoms animate the principal rounded sections. The lively decoration is held in balance by the clear vertical line of the neck. Chinese polychrome porcelain frequently uses repeating floral motifs to bring continuity to complex shapes, with ornamental borders defining the transitions between individual sections. This vase is a particularly vivid example of that approach: its broad foot gives visual stability to the narrow neck, and the repeated flowers bind the two together. Its appeal lies in the clarity of the silhouette and the rhythmic distribution of colour.
