[ translate ]

A CHINESE EXPORT 'ROCOCO STYLE' WALLPAPER PANEL
18th/19th century
Brightly painted in colour and gilt on silk with central floral columns laden with ripe fruits, issuing from arching acanthus leaf swags and delicate flowering and blossoming stems, alternating with pairs of large pink peony blooms, enclosing smaller violet-hued peonies, all on an ivory silk ground, lined.
289cm x 72.5cm (113 3/4in x 28 1/2in).
Footnotes:
十八/十九世紀 外銷洛可可式挂屏

This highly decorative wallpaper panel, produced for the western export market as part of a series, was likely commissioned for a grand European house. The design shows signs of Indian influence, and that of European ceramic motifs. Sometimes Western merchants provided the same design to both Indian and Chinese craftsmen, who used different techniques to produce the products for export. See a similarly designed Chinese embroidered hanging, 19th century, in the Victoria and Albert Museum, accession no. FE.1-1980.
