A CHINESE GREY AND BLACK ARCHAISTIC JADE 'DRAGON' PENDANT Ming Dynasty 明 灰玉龍珮 Of flattened form, the S-shaped body of the mythical beast topped with a ferocious dragon head bearing powerful jaws and sharp teeth, the mythical beast's body terminating in a scrolling tail, carved from a greyish-celadon stone splashed with black and flecked with russet, together with a box, 6.2cm long (2) - PROVENANCE: From a Maltese private collection, gifted to the owner in the 1980s 來源: 馬爾他私人收藏,1980s贈予於現藏家 - NOTE: A similar pendant, carved as an archaistic bird and dated to the Yuan/Ming Dynasty, is housed in the collection of the British Museum, acc. no. 1945,1017.123. A pendant carved from a similarly-coloured stone and dated to the Ming Dynasty, carved as an archaistic bird, was offered at Sotheby's New York, 1st December 2022, lot 741. This carving is of a slightly-smaller size, similar profile, and with comparable incised scrolling decorations to the body. Another pendant from the Dr. Wou Kiuan collection, this one carved as a qilin, was offered at Sotheby's London, 17th May 2023, lot 86. The present carving exhibits similar use of archaistic motifs and grey/black jade as a pendant sold at Bonhams Hong Kong, 24th November 2013, lot 258, which was dated late Ming/early Qing.
