Before Mei Lanfang moved his family to Shanghai, in the 1920s in Beijing, he had numerous interactions with families from the former imperial household who were enthusiasts of opera and painting. Mei Lanfang and Pu Xinshe also had exchanges. Pu Xinshe gifted Mei Lanfang several works. On the occasion of Mei Lanfang's 37th birthday, Pu Xinshe specially painted a landscape with a lofty scholar and inscribed a poem to commemorate the event.
