A CHINESE WOOD TABLET, PAIZA Ming Dynasty 明 木腰牌 The rectangular tablet with a rounded top carved to both sides with a calligraphic inscription, 11cm long 銘文:鴻臚寺序班。朝參官懸帶此牌,無牌者依律論罪,借者及借與者罪同,出京不用。 - PROVENANCE: European Private Collection of a Gentleman 來源: 歐洲紳士私人收藏 - NOTE: A paiza was a tablet carried by officials and envoys used to signify certain privileges and authority. Popularised by the Mongols, they were also carried by officials during the Liao and Jin dynasties. The paiza allowed nobles and officials to demand goods and services from civilian populations.
