The circular cover carved in high relief with a central scene depicting five scholars gazing at a luxuriant garden scene dotted with gnarled pine and paulownia trees besides jagged rocks issuing flowering shrubs, all reserved on diaper grounds and within a scrolling border of blossoming peonies, the sloping sides with the Eight Buddhist Emblems alternating with blossoming lotus issuing leafy vines, the same designs repeated on the sides of the box, the foot encircled by a key-fret band, the interior and base lacquered black. 26.3cm (10 3/8in) diam.
