A CIRCA 6TH C. CORINTHIAN CLAY ARYBALLOS WITH SIREN

The classic ball-shape ancient Greek pottery vessel used to hold scented oils and perfumes in the bath has a wide, flat circular rim on the short neck with wide short strap handle, the globular body scratch decorated and painted with large siren in black on red with raised enamel accents on its wings, a swan on one side, a big cat on the other, floating rosettes throughout the field and alternating red and black stripes on the rim.

Measures 5.5 x 4.75 inches.

Provenance: The estate of Morton and Estelle Sosland.
In Kansas City, the Sosland family name is synonymous with both giving, and the arts. Of their many contributions to the community, 'The Soslands gave one of the nation's finest private collections of American Indian art to the Nelson-Atkins' museum (nelson-atkins.org).
