A CLAIRE-DE-LUNE GLAZED TRIPOD BRUSH WASHER, 18TH-19TH CENTURY
A CLAIRE-DE-LUNE GLAZED TRIPOD BRUSH WASHER, 18TH-19TH CENTURY
Expert's note
The appearance of the Yongzheng mark on the present lot is particularly noteworthy. During firing and subsequent cooling, the base of the vessel contracted and became slightly distorted, causing the previously applied mark to stretch accordingly. Such firing-induced distortion of reign marks is a well-known phenomenon on imperial porcelain of the later Qianlong period.
China. Of compressed globular form with incurved rim, supported on three truncated conical legs, and covered inside and out in a glaze of even lavender-blue tone. The base with a six-character da Qing Yongzheng nianzhi seal mark painted in underglaze blue.
Provenance: From a Dutch private collection, assembled since the 1930s, and brought back from Indonesia. Thence by descent in the family.
Condition: Very good condition with only minor surface wear. The interior with some calcareous deposits, likely from prolonged use as a flowerpot.
Weight: 2 kg
Dimensions: Diameter 24 cm
