A COPPER LUSTRE-PAINTED POTTERY BOWL WITH A RIDER ON HORSEBACK Kashan, Iran, 13th century Of typical conical shape, with a flattened base and resting on a short, upright, circular foot, painted in ruby and amber copper lustre on a white ground, the decoration on the interior following the standards of the third category of Kashan wares ('Kashan style') featuring a central roundel with a rider clad in a dotted robe on his steed, the cavetto with cross-legged seated figures wearing an analogous robe, their heads surrounded by haloes, alternating with chequered and beaded cypress trees, the rim area and exterior enhanced with stylised vegetal motifs framed within solid copper lustre bands, 21cm diam. and 9.8cm high. Lustre-painted pottery employs an overglaze technique perfected by potters working in the medieval Islamic world, which consists in applying metallic oxides to a previously fired tin-glazed ceramic body and re-fire the vessel in a reduced oxygen environment. An expensive and highly complex process, lustre pottery from the Seljuk Kashan period often features distinctive moon-faced characters wearing dotted robes depicted in courtly settings or hunting scenes.Click here to share:
