A Carved Wooden Figural Tobacco Pipe, Ulmer Kloben–Style, Brass Hinged Lid
A carved wooden figural tobacco pipe, the body deeply carved in high relief with a grotesque mask-like face and layered foliate and textural details. The pipe is fitted with a hinged brass bowl cover, pierced for airflow and decorated with engraved scrollwork, retaining its wire lift. The stem is carved integrally from the same block of wood, terminating in a slightly curved mouthpiece. The wood displays a rich, dark patina with visible tool marks and surface texture consistent with age and use. Interior of the bowl shows evidence of prior smoking. The overall form and construction are consistent with German folk art traditions, often referred to as Ulmer Kloben–style, dating to the 19th century.
