A Chamberlain Worcester chocolate cup, cover and stand from the 'Horatia Service', circa 1802-03
Of tapering shape with two gilt loop handles and a gilt ring finial, richly-decorated with the 'Fine Old Japan' pattern no.240, with Imari panels reserving three gold-ground medallions on each part, the circular panels painted with a Ducal coronet, a Viscount's coronet and the crest of the San Josef, the stand 13.6cm diam, the cup and cover 11.4cm high, the stand and cover both marked '240' in purple (3)
Provenance
Vice-Admiral Horatio, Lord Nelson
Emma, Lady Hamilton
Alexander Nelson Hood, Viscount Bridport
Charles Wentworth Wass Collection, Phillips, 6 December 1995, lot 322

As with the following lot in this sale, this is one of the '6 Chocolate Cups & stands Complete... no.240' that cost six guineas when invoiced by the Chamberlain factory. The Horatia Service had been ordered during Nelson's visit to the factory in August 1802. When the 'Trickey Inventory' of Lady Hamilton's possessions was drawn up circa 1813 as surety for a loan, the Horatia Set was listed and the chocolate cups were incorrectly described as '6 Wine Cups, Covers & Stands'.

The present lot is the example from the Wentworth Wass Collection, which was sold by Phillips on 6 December 1995, lot 322. It still contains part of a letter from Charles Wentworth Wass stating that 'This Cup and Sr is from Lord Bridport's Coll'n & is believed to be the only covered Cup and Sr known'. Viscount Bridport had inherited many of Nelson's possessions from his mother, Nelson's niece Charlotte, Duchess of Bronte. Bridport also collected Nelson relics and he may have acquired some of Emma's porcelain that had been retained by Alderman Smith.

On his death in 1905, Charles Wentworth Wass's collection was divided. Part was sold by the London dealers Stoner and Evans, and the rest was inherited by family in the Channel Islands until sold by Phillips in 1995.

For further information on the Horatia Service please see the footnote to lot 41 in this sale.
